We bought a house! Very exciting. We have some more room and now need another couch.
While buying secondhand is always the most sustainable option, maybe you don't feel comfortable with purchasing some items used....like couches...because things happen on them. My husband requested that for this item we buy new, so with that in mind, I started researching.
Did you know all sorts of toxic chemicals are put into most mainstream furniture? Yes, even our furniture is out there potentially causing us cancer.
VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are found in upholstery and glues and formaldehyde is often used in the plywood framing. These chemicals are known carcinogens. During my hunt for sustainable, as-toxic-free-as-possible furniture, I came up with this list:
1) Medley Home : gorgeous furniture, made in USA, the frame is FSC certified, foam is CertiPUR certified, some fabric is recycled, no harsh chemicals or flame retardants. I've got my eye on this Ridge Accent Chair.
2) Burrow: made in USA, responsibly sourced hardwood, upcycled stain resistant fabrics, shipped in recycled packaging, no flame retardants.
3) Sabai: made in USA, frame is FSC certified, foam is CertiPUR certified, recycled fiber fill, fabric is all recycled, all packaging is 100% recycled and plastic-free minus the leg bags which can be reused.
4) From the Source: frame is FSC certified, no flame retardants, sustainably sourced and reclaimed materials in some of their lines. If looking for couches, check out their Gus Modern line.
We ended up going with Burrow and are really happy. The couch arrived very simply- just in boxes, which we recycled, and each component came in a plastic bag, which was unfortunate. But at least there was no further packaging and the bags could be reused for donation drop-offs or trash liners.
The sections of the couch are modules that all latch together. The cushions can be flipped to either side for a new look and the couch itself is very comfortable.
